Vine & Fig Tree

Vine & Fig Tree is a non-profit, tax-exempt educational organization dedicated to transforming you and your world, accelerating the fulfillment of the "Vine & Fig Tree" prophecies in the Bible.

The Vine & Fig Tree prophecies and our vision are described on the Vine & Fig Tree Home Page. Some of this information is found below. In a nutshell, the Prophets held out a vision of a world where we beat our "swords into plowshares" and everyone dwells securely under his own "Vine & Fig Tree."

The idea of everyone dwelling securely under his own "Vine & Fig Tree" is the original "American Dream." America's Founders often quoted "Vine & Fig Tree" language in their letters and speeches. Americans were familiar with the Bible in general and this vision in particular.
Today, Americans are ignorant of the Bible and the "American Dream" is described as "owning your own home," which means paying a quarter of a million dollars in interest over the life of a 30-year mortgage on a home owned by the bank, which can be taken at any time by the government under "eminent domain" whenever the government wants to give your home to some "special interest."
Two centuries ago, the only people who had a mortgaged home were those who had experienced some devastating personal tragedy.
Americans who lived two hundred years ago would say that Americans living today are experiencing a devastating national tragedy.
America was once the most prosperous and admired nation on earth.
Today America is bankrupt, not prosperous, and despised even by those who formerly admired us.
We "text" each other on our "Smart Phones"
because we lack the maturity of soul to form close, personal, meaningful, and lasting relationships with other people.
We bomb whole populations "back to the stone age"
because we want low gas prices for our "adult toys."
America no longer exports missionaries who preach the gospel, dig wells, help farmers, build churches, establish schools, maintain hospitals, fund libraries, and create prosperous and harmonious civilizations out of poverty, superstition, and barbarism.
Today we export more pornography and weapons of mass destruction than Bibles.
Our toes are hanging over the fiscal cliff, and the ground beneath our feet is crumbling.
To feel better about this, we buy a new car.
We have paid for our bombs and our narcotic high-tech gadgets with money we haven't earned.
The Bible says, "The borrower is the slave of the lender."
Do you know who your lenders are?
Do you know how they will treat their slaves when their economic system collapses?
We vote for politicians who will make us feel better by promising us lots of stuff we can't afford. Politicians have promised us benefits totaling $222 TRILLION more than can ever be paid for.
We don't realize it, with our "Smart Phones" and our "Smart Bombs," but we live our lives in a state of profound economic and personal trauma.

What Can Be Done?

You need a "coach."

What is "Coaching?"

The Bible says life is like a race. If you want to win the gold medal in a grueling athletic competition, the first thing you should do is hire a coach.

What your Coach will tell you to do depends on what shape you're in.

  • If you're overweight, you'll need to lose some.

  • If you're sickly, emaciated and suffering from malnutrition, you'll need to improve your health and diet.

  • If you don't even know the rules of the game, you'll have to study the playbook. Be prepared for your coach to drill you on the plays, strategies, and rules of the game.

The average American today does not know the rules of the game of life, and is in frighteningly bad physical shape.

[W]e ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained . . . .
George Washington, Inaugural Address (1789)

What if Samuel Adams -- the architect of the "Boston Tea Party" and "The Father of the American Revolution" -- could be your personal coach?

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude than the animating contest of freedom go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!
Sam Adams,
speaking at the State House in Philadelphia, “to a very numerous audience” on August 1, 1776

People like Sam Adams deserve some credit for creating the most prosperous and admired nation in history. But their violent revolution ended up giving us a government which was more of a tyranny than the one they abolished.

Let's see what we can learn from Samuel Adams about Personal Life Coaching.

What Would Samuel Adams
Say to You If He Could Be
Your Personal Coach?

He would say you're a victim of educational malpractice.

But if you cut out one hour a day of the mainstream media, and follow the advice of Samuel Adams, one of the architects of "the Boston Tea Party" (1773), you can be transformed into

  • An Extraordinary American,

• An Extraordinary Christian,
  • An Extraordinary Human Being.

Those were the three goals of Samuel Adams in the first letter he sent to Americans through a network of communication known as "The Committees of Correspondence." Adams coached America toward Independence, and became known as "The Father of the American Revolution."

But if Sam Adams could spend a month in your home, see what has happened to the government he helped create, and see how you react to it, he would say

  • You are NOT a Real American
  • You are not a Genuine Christian
  • You are a bad steward of the gifts, talents, rights and privileges endowed to you as a human being by your Creator.

But Adams would also realize he and the other Founders of America made some serious mistakes. Probably the most important lesson he would learn from history, is that in order to safeguard the Vine & Fig Tree vision, we have to beat our "swords into plowshares."

More than diet, more than push-ups, more than memorizing the playbook, beating "swords into plowshares" is probably the toughest assignment your Coach will give you. We live in a society obsessed and dominated by swords. Not literal steel swords, but Force.

Violence.   Power.   Aggression.

Our world is dominated by the institutions of military power and physical compulsion. George Washington is reported to have said,

Government is not reason, it is not eloquence — it is force. Like fire it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. . . .

Sociologist Max Weber says "the State" is "a human community that (successfully) claims the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory."

We vote for politicians who will wield lethal force around the world. We disrespect the elderly. We insult each other. We act aggressively and even violently against our spouses, children, students, employees, co-workers, neighbors, and total strangers. We don't think much about the institutions and structures in our society that embody systematic violence and aggression against others. Or else we approve of them whole-heartedly.

It will take a great deal of "Spring Training" to get in shape, spiritually, intellectually, personally, and even physically. The Vine & Fig Tree Coaching Program is a year-long program that will accomplish this, and much more.

Augustine, in his book City of God, wrote this:

Justice being taken away, then, what are kingdoms but great robberies? For what are robberies themselves, but little kingdoms? The band itself is made up of men; it is ruled by the authority of a prince, it is knit together by the pact of the confederacy; the booty is divided by the law agreed on. If, by the admittance of abandoned men, this evil increases to such a degree that it holds places, fixes abodes, takes possession of cities, and subdues peoples, it assumes the more plainly the name of a kingdom, because the reality is now manifestly conferred on it, not by the removal of covetousness, but by the addition of impunity. Indeed, that was an apt and true reply which was given to Alexander the Great by a pirate who had been arrested. For when that king had asked the man what he meant by keeping hostile possession of the sea, he answered with bold pride, What you mean by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a "robber," while you who does it with a great fleet are styled "emperor."

It is for this reason that the Old Testament Prophets did not trust the empires of their day. This is why we today should not trust "the government." The Bible is the most trenchant and sustained critique of power ever written. People who are enchanted by the Vine & Fig Tree vision do not believe anyone, under any name or label, has the right to use force to impose his will on others.

The first day of Spring Training involves coming to this profound conclusion. It is a major transformation, because you have been brainwashed to believe that systematic violence and the initiation of force is absolutely critical for an orderly and prosperous society.

Jesus told His followers that the emperors of the world love to be "archists." That's a transliteration of the Greek word in Mark 10:42-45, the root of our English word "anarchist." Jesus said Christians are not to be "archists," but servants.

Some will logically conclude, "If we are not to be archists, or not to support archists, doesn't that mean we are anarchists?"

Yes, and your coach is going to require you to read the Five Most Important Works in the History of Western Civilization to help you arrive at this conclusion.

At this point, please take a detour to this website. This website discusses the implications of beating "swords into plowshares" and repudiating "archism."

Then, for a complete outline of our year-long coaching program, and an enrollment form, go to this website. This website explains

  • The three goals Samuel Adams had for America, and now has for you,

  • Three reasons why Sam Adams would say you're a victim of "educational malpractice,"

  • Three huge mistakes Adams and most of America's Founding Fathers made

  • Three things you need to become

    • an extraordinary American

    • an extraordinary Christian

    • an extraordinary Human Being

That website also describes the Five Most Important Works in the History of Western Civilization which we will read together during our one-year program.

The substance of these two websites will soon be incorporated into this website. Vine & Fig Tree administers one coaching program under several names, so that we can appeal to different demographic segments. But it's the same one-year program.

Vine & Fig Tree

The name "Vine & Fig Tree" comes from the fourth chapter of the prophet Micah, and is set forth here. You've probably heard Micah's words before -- we beat our "swords into plowshares" and everyone dwells safely under their own "Vine & Fig Tree.

America's Founding Fathers were familiar with this vision: "Vine & Fig Tree" is the worldview that made America "the greatest nation on God's green earth."

George Washington's Diaries are available online at the Library of Congress. That website introduces those writings with these words:
No theme appears more frequently in the writings of Washington than his love for his land. The diaries are a monument to that concern. In his letters he referred often, as an expression of this devotion and its resulting contentment, to an Old Testament passage. After the Revolution, when he had returned to Mount Vernon, he wrote the Marquis de Lafayette on Feb. 1, 1784: "At length my Dear Marquis I am become a private citizen on the banks of the Potomac, & under the shadow of my own Vine & my own Fig-tree." This phrase occurs at least 11 times in Washington's letters. "And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree" (2 Kings 18:31).

Many other American Founders wrote of this ideal. "Vine & Fig Tree" is the original "American Dream."

The phrase occurs a number of times in Scripture. These references are visual reminders of the Hebrew word for salvation, which means
• peace,
• wholeness,
• health,
• welfare, and
• private property free from pirates and princes.
When today's Americans hear the word "salvation," they usually think about going to heaven when they die. When the writers of the Bible used the word "salvation," they wanted you to be thinking about dwelling safely under your own Vine & Fig Tree during this life -- much more often than they wanted you to be thinking about what you'll be doing in the afterlife.

The best place to see the Vine & Fig Tree ideal is in the book of Micah.

Let's look at Micah's prophecy (on the left) and ask a few questions (on the right):
And it will come about in the last days
That the mountain of the House of the LORD
Will be established as the chief of the mountains
And it will be raised above the hills
Are we in the "last days?"

When did this establishment take place?

And the peoples will stream to it.
And many nations will come and say,
"Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD
And to the House of the God of Jacob,
Is Christianity doomed to minority status throughout history? Hasn't Christianity been growing since the first century?
That He may teach us about His ways
And that we may walk in His paths."
For from Zion will go forth the Law
Even the Word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
What should be the Christian's attitude toward the Law? Isn't every Word of a "Lord" "Law?"
And He will judge between many peoples
And render decisions for mighty, distant nations.
Then they will hammer their
swords into plowshares
And their spears into pruning hooks;
Nation will not lift up sword against nation
And never again will they train for war.
Are we commanded to beat our swords into plowshares today? Or do we wait for the Second Coming?
And each of them will sit under his   What about private property?
Vine and under his  fig tree,
With no one to make them afraid.
For the LORD of hosts has spoken.
What about technology? What about the military? What is it that really brings "security?"
Though all the peoples walk
Each in the name of his god,
As for us, we will walk
In the Name of the LORD our God
forever and ever.
What if all the politicians, university professors, TV commentators, newspaper editors, rock stars, CEO's, athletes, authors, and think-tanks repudiate the Vine & Fig Tree vision and tell you not to believe it?
In that day, saith the LORD,
will I assemble her that halteth,
and I will gather her that is driven out,
and her that I have afflicted;
And I will make her that halted a remnant,
and her that was cast far off a strong nation:
and the LORD shall reign over them in mount Zion
from henceforth, even for ever.
Should we strive to be on top, or to help those on the bottom? Is God on the side of those who have accomplished much by their own power and initiative, or is He on the side of those who are willing to be used by God to accomplish much to His Glory?
